Where's the NEW site?!

As you may have read in previous posts, we were working on getting a new website up and running, as we've pretty much lost the database for the old website. Unfortunately though, we've made no progress.

We need help! If anybody is interested in helping develop the new Island Gamers website, either by contributing code or design and graphics, please let us know! We desperately need a decent logo or emblem for Island Gamers, as well as general site design. This is a fresh start, and any ideas that you have for a new site will be welcomed!

If you are interested in development; we have decided to use a Content Management System called DotNetNuke as the basis of a new site. Just drop us a comment on this blog if you've got any suggestions or questions! :)

The Shape of Things

IG as you knew it is dead. We're retiring the server because it is literally falling to bits, and the site as it was will be ditched.

Don't fret though, there's always a plan! We're working on building a brand new, simpler and more refined IG.net. We're modifying an off-the-shelf portal solution to our needs, allowing us to get a new site up as quickly as possible. The new site will provide a blog engine for each registered Islander to use, as well as a simple forum with more focus on gaming, and less focus on bullshit.

We're pricing up parts for a new 1U server. We have a case (Byles posted some pictures a while ago) and we're working out which motherboards will fit in it. We're aiming to build a simple Core2 machine with a couple of gigs of RAM.

If anyone out there wants to donate a 300GB+ SATA drive to the cause, let us know ;)

Server Repairs

Just to keep you all informed. The server has suffered from a major disk failure. We are in the process of getting it shipped back to the Island so we can perform the necessary repairs. Once complete, we hope to get the server shipped back to the data centre and back online asap.

Server troubles!

Well, we never did get around to moving the server to a new host, and now we've run into trouble again!

We think the server has crashed (possibly due to a faulty disk), since we can't remote-desktop to it. We'll request a reboot as soon as possible!

The server is back!

Unexpectedly, the Island Gamers server came back online yesterday evening. We had been keeping the website offline while we monitored the server, and everything seems okay so far.

We've since put the website back online, so if you're seeing this page instead of the Island Gamers homepage, it's probably because the DNS updates haven't sorted themselves yet.

There will be more downtime in the near future, when we will be moving the server to a new home to avoid this nonsense happening again.

New server build

The 1U chassis' were delivered the other day, so I've been digging around for some spare bits and pieces to build this new server with. What we're currently lacking is; some RAM, a 1U heatsink-fan/blower, and a decent sized hard disc drive. A few extra fans to keep things cool wouldn't go amiss either. If anybody has any spares, chuck them this way!

The board and processor I've stuck in this aren't anything special, at 1.7GHz - but it's better than nothing for now.

Once that's all done, it's just a matter of getting the server hosted - preferably on the Island.

Where's the server?!

I don't think we're ever going to get the Island Gamers server back at this rate. The Netrino phones go to voicemail, and emails don't get read (or at least replied to). I think I've found the guy-who-runs-the-company's home address though, so if anybody fancies a roadtrip to England for some gentle words, let me know!

I guess the next step will be to contact the datacenter directly - although I very much doubt we're going to get anywhere with that one.

On a good note though, I'm waiting for a couple of 1U rackmount chassis to arrive so we can build a new server! I've spoken with an island internet provider regarding co-location, and it sounds promising, but it's probably too early to guess what the outcome will be.

Current Status

Here's a quick update.

I've just this minute emailed Netrino (the current co-lo hosts) urging them to phone me. For weeks, FBz has been promised a call back almost every day - but hasn't received one. Today, their phones go to voicemail.

In the email, I request that the server is made available for collection by us - regardless of us not having a new home for it just yet. If they do not contact us by the end of the new week, we'll be considering legal action.

We don't particularly care about the server itself, but we desperately need the data on the harddisks to get the Island Gamers website up and running again (as well as many other websites that the server was hosting).

As most members probably know, the server as it is, is not in a standard rackmountable chassis, preventing us from hosting it with the majority of co-lo providers. So, last night I purchased a 1U chassis for the server. At least there's a little bit of progress!

Temporary Blog

Since islandgamers.net is still down, I've set up this temporary blog.

We still haven't heard anything from the current co-lo hosts, so last week we made a move towards finding a new home for the server on the Island.

Fingers Crossed!

The server is being physically moved this coming weekend. All of the hosts client's servers are being moved out of Meridian Gate to a new location, due to the cost of transit or something. Now it might be a bit silly of me to assume anything, but I am assuming that out fan will be replaced during this move, although I have yet to receive any confirmation. Fingers crossed!

The server is still dead...

The server has died again (at around 2100 last night). As far as we can tell, the CPU fan is broken which is causing the system to overheat and thus shutdown. Apparently a reboot request has been sent. Donations for new server parts and maintanence would be greatly welcomed!

Still no word...

Still no word from the host regarding what has happened to the server. Last Wednesday the server was due to be transfered into a new case with a shiney new PSU. The server came back online so we presumed all was well in IG2-land.I did not hear from the hosts to confirm that this work was undertaken. No invoice has been issued to myself/IG for the work undertaken. The server died again on Saturday evening (around 11pm). I sent numerous reboot requests and support requests to the hosts. I have heard nothing since.

As we hear more, we'll keep you posted!
